This year’s nominees for the 37th GLAAD Media Awards have just been officially announced, and several kids and teen titles are in the running to be honored for their LGBTQ media representation.
Disney cornered 30 nominations to dominate the race this year—seven of which are in the three main kids programming categories.
Disney Junior titles Firebuds and Star Wars: Young Jedi Adventures both made the cut for Outstanding Children’s Programming, a younger-skewing category that also features legacy series Sesame Street and 2025 releases Be@rbrick and Mermicorno: Starfall as nominees.
Three Mouse House shows are in the running for the older-skewing Animated Kids Programming award: The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder (Disney+), The Bravest Knight (Hulu, pictured above) and Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur (Disney Channel)—even though Moon Girl controversially shelved an episode focused on a transgender character in its second season. (Not to mention other recent instances of the company dropping queer representation.)
Netflix, which also has a consistent track record in LGBTQ representation for young audiences, bagged one nomination in each of the kids & family categories with XO, Kitty (live action) and Jurassic World: Chaos Theory (animated). Overall, the platform earned 23 nominations this year, putting it ahead of all other streamers.
Beyond the three dedicated kids categories, a few teen and family-oriented titles also made their mark: Stranger Things (Netflix) and Doctor Who (Disney+) are competing for Outstanding Drama Series, while coming-of-age movies like Young Hearts (Strand Releasing) and Fairyland (Lionsgate/WILLA) earned nods for Outstanding Film with a Limited Theatrical Release.
