Bringing the same rigor we use for academic metrics to SEL.
Big Bad Boo’s assessment instruments were born out of a need for precision in high-stakes, post-conflict environments. When existing tools failed to capture complex developmental progress, we recruited researchers and data scientists from the University of Oxford and Sesame Street to build custom, validated instruments from the ground up.
Through the Schools2030 initiative—supported by the LEGO and IKEA Foundations—we expanded this work into a unified K–6 framework. These instruments provide deep insights into the metrics that matter most:
• SEL Competencies and Skills: Detailed measures of CASEL and OECD metrics.
• Citizenship Skills: Metrics for ethical decision-making, media literacy, and democratic norms.
• Student Wellbeing: Critical data on the happiness, optimism, resilience, and belonging of children.

DESIGNED FOR SCHOOL REALITIES
Sophisticated data. Simple administration. Our instruments are designed to provide comprehensive data in an assessment that takes no more than 20–30 minutes for students to complete independently.
Developmentally Designed: We use unique vignettes for older students to capture nuanced attitudes and beliefs. For early learners (K–2), we use visual images with audio support so emerging readers can share their experiences independently and accurately.
The 360-Degree View: To ensure accuracy, we corroborate student perspectives with Teacher Observations on behavior and peer climate. This helps you understand if teachers are seeing what students are feeling.
