DEI

Big Bad Boo was founded with the objective of creating quality family entertainment that promotes, “Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI)”. We view this with three distinct pillars which include DEI in our 1) Teams behind and in front of camera 2) Company Culture and 3) Original Content. For example, our TV shows, games and books promote DEI and we work with advisory teams that review all content, including scripts, designs, story arcs and other assets, to ensure we combat stereotypes, respect and celebrate different cultures and normalize the inclusion of minority groups, particularly those that are disenfranchised, including LGBTQ+, BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color), female creatives and those with disabilities.

In an industry where over 70% of children’s programs feature white male character leads, Big Bad Boo has created six television series that feature female, gender-balanced, minority or LGBTQ+ leads; produced many firsts in the area, winning accolades for innovaFon, and being called upon to share knowledge on how we can collectively move the needle. Shabnam is ooen participates in panels and conferences on this topic. We believe diversity comes naturally to us. The company’s ownership is 50% female, and 100% racialized and we started the company to tell our story.

In order to pay it forward, Big Bad Boo has founded key initiatives to increase the voice and participation of women and minorities in an otherwise male dominated industry. In 2020 for example, Big Bad Boo launched and sponsored a series of workshops for BIPOC creatives including female, queer, and disabled, which focuses on building the capacity of minority creatives in the area of writing, animation and storyboarding. The work shops continue to date and so far twelve of the alumni have worked on Big Bad Boo Shows while six have been hired on other film and television projects in the industry. This program was so successful that it received the endorsement of the Canada Media Fund as well as CBC Kids. We continue to speak on panels at conferences and event on the topics of authenticity, inclusion, diversity, equity and accessibility in hopes that all companies can also be mindful of these important values.
